George Hagen is a novelist and multi-media artist. His sculptures are constructed with wire, brown paper, wood and epoxy. Whenever possible, he uses repurposed and recycled materials. His film and literary background drives him to look for sculptural ideas that contain some element of drama.
His works are primarily dedicated to humanist themes—the push and pull between child and parent, for example, and the darker elements of the human character—social outliers, prejudice, and demagoguery. He also takes ideas from creatures in his dreams: towering monsters, windborn sprites, insects and other amazing beings coping with the dynamics of gravity. His subjects soar, cling to the earth or struggle to remain upright.
Hagen was born in Zimbabwe, and spent formative years of his childhood in the United Kingdom and in the United States where he began a writing career in film. He has published novels for adults and children and designed large scale street puppets for parades and demonstrations. He animated an original shadow puppet short film which was exhibited at King’s Manor Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. You can find his short animations and videos on puppetry on youtube.
